Headlines
This week Council received a petition about suburban traffic in the area and agreed to prepare a report in response, answered questions relating to biodiversity and plant health in our community, and discussed traffic management at Glenunga International High School.
In our community, we also received updates on the Kensington Gardens Reserve which will begin construction in October. We also celebrated 25 years of the beloved Pepper Street Arts Centre and we're also preparing for the re-opening of the Regal Theatre following recent renovations.
We've also started looking at ways to improve ways for small businesses to promote themselves, starting with the Burnside Community directory, which will be delivered to every house. Finally, preparations for the warmer months have begun, with considerations being made regarding bushfire safety and immunisations, amongst other things.

Ferguson Conservation Park is home to some of Burnside's best natural beauty. However, in recent years we have allowed it to fall into disarray. We need to update it ASAP so the public can enjoy the area to its fullest extent.
Hallett Road is key road in our community; it also unfortunately sees a higher than average rate of collisions. Curbing the number of collisions rate along Hallett Road will need further discussion as I think speed is perhaps a contributing factor but I think there are other opportunities to reduce the hazards faced by drivers along this road.
The Keelty Report looks at the council response to the last bushfire season and presents us with ways to improve our response system, many of which we can implement at a council level.

Community Matters
Biodiversity and plant health in the community: This week, Council discussed a couple of issues regarding plant health and biodiversity in our community. The questions about the death of a 75 year old tree at the Glenunga Tennis Club site and the conservation of Kensington Park Oval's biodiversity following a recent vandalism were resolved with little debate. However, these incidences are evidence of a larger issue at hand regarding the management of our plants in the community and is definitely something we will need to look at addressing.
Traffic management: Our last meeting saw us debate a a plan to undertake a traffic management report at Glenunga International High School. The investigation would have looked at any traffic and parking concerns associated with the expansion of student numbers in 2022. While this particular motion failed, we are looking at undertaking a city-wide traffic study in the future. Project updates: October is fast approaching, meaning that the Kensington Gardens Reserve upgrade is going to start work soon! With the inclusion of disability access, footpaths, and fitness equipment, this is set to become an excellent community facility. October will also see the reopening of the Regal Theatre, which has been under going significant renovations this year. We are honoured to have musical theatre icon Rhonda Burchmore hosting one of their first major events. You can purchase tickets here and if you want more information about any of our projects, you check out our new capital works projects map here. Burnside Community Directory: In response to becoming a signatory of the Small Business Initiative Charter, the Council has decided to create a directory that will be delivered to every household in our city. This directory will include every small business in our city and will be a great starting point for encouraging locals to shop local, as well as allowing businesses to get their name out there. If you are a small business owner and want to be included, be sure to contact HWR Media on 08 8379 9522 or contact bdalton@hwrmedia.com.au before Friday August 28. More information on the charter in general can be found here General community matters: Earlier this year, the Keelty Bushfire report was published, outlining the State's response to the last bushfire season and discussing how we can improve our response in future seasons. Last season's fire were some of the most vicious this country has ever seen and as Australia's summers are set to get hotter, we need to re-analyse what we as a council can do to minimise any potential harms a brutal bushfire season can cause to our residents. I outlined a few suggestions on my website here and I will be working with the Council to ensure we enforce some of these in the coming months. We are also still running free immunisations through the Eastern Health Authority. Unfortunately, due to COVID- related restrictions, drop-in clinics are now appointment only and will only be operating out of the EHA Offices at 101 Payneham Road, St Peters. However, I cannot stress how important it is to keep up to date with all your vaccinations, for both your family and community. Children up to the age six will also be excluded from early learning services if they are unvaccinated. The Pepper Street Art Centre also celebrated its 25th birthday! Located on Magill Road, the Art Centre is a hotspot for showcasing the work of local artists. With monthly exhibitions, classes for all ages, and a gift shop with presents for every occasion, there really is no reason not to check it out for yourself. The Draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan is also under going community consultation at the moment. The Plan has many great initiatives that will make our community more inclusive for those living with disabilities. I would recommend everyone to have a read of it here and participate in the consultation here. Finally, many of our facilities that closed during the peak of the pandemic are now getting ready to re-open. One of these is the George Bolton Swimming Centre in Hazelwood Park. Not even the ducks could wait for the pool to re-open, with a mother duck already seen taking her little ducklings for a swim. You can also take your ducklings for an outing at the pool when the 2020/2021 season commences.
